[7:54:00 PM | Edited 8:00:53 PM] Fate: *You awake from your sleep your bed soaked as your water has broken. Frantic and alone, you rise from your bed and waddle in pain over to the phone and dial 911. It takes almost 20 minutes for the paramedics to arrive. Contractions are currently eight minutes apart. A team of paramedics come in through the door that you told 911 you would leave open. The team carefully puts you in a wheelchair and down the elevator. A seven-minute drive to the hospital and you are immediately wheeled into a room. Nurses and doctors come in throughout the day. An spinal tap epidural is given to you for the pain.
1pm: You are fully dialated and begin the birthing process. However there is a complication. You begin to feel weak. Your head droops to the side and you see blood begin to drip down the side of the hospital bed. Doctors become frantic and begin to work diligently. You unfortunately lose consciousness.
You awaken groggy and confused a woman sits at your side reading an old book with no noticable markings or title.*
[8:10:42 PM] Dagny: Lights. Hospital blanket. Hospital gown. Tile. Dagny blinks several times to clear her bleary vision. What was... Pain. The longest eternity she had ever experienced. Blood. A hand goes to her abdomen. Her heart quickly begins to pick up the pace as the fear that had faded with her unconsciousness surges back with a vengeance. She inhales sharply. “My baby, where’s my baby?” Her hands grasp the handles on the side of the bed tightly as she tries to lift herself up, looking frantically around the room.
[8:21:42 PM] Fate: *The woman drops her book on her floor as Dagny panics. She places a hand on your chest and a hand upon your forehead.* “Easy child, easy... Listen to my voice and breathe.” *Her words seem to take hold of you and your body seems to calm even against your will.* “That’s it sweetheart, in...” *she breathes in to guide you,* “and out,” *she exhales with you.* “My sweet sweet girl, it pains me to be the one who has to burden you with this news. But your son did not survive. He was a stillbirth. There was a complication during your birth and you were nearly lost. I know this news comes down on you like a hammer to a nail. But I am here to aid you in whatever you need child.”
[8:34:32 PM | Edited 8:35:15 PM] Dagny: Despite her pounding heart, despite the fear that grips her still, Dagny finds herself taking a deep breath in and breathing out in time with this woman. She calms slightly, enough to sink back into the bed. But the news doesn’t hit her like a hammer to a nail. It hits like a hammer to a block of ice. At first, the cracks slice through it. “W-what?” This single word is more breathed than spoken, barely coherent. It’s as if her blood freezes still in her veins shortly after it drains from her face. The white noise of distant hospital activity closes in around her. She stares at this woman, trying to take apart and put together these words. The cracks inch slowly, steadily onward from the resonance of the initial blow...
[8:44:42 PM] Fate: *The woman turns and pulls the chair closer to the bed, takes a seat and places your hand into hers, her other hand on top. “What pains me in this tragic time is that nothing I can say or do will ever truly erase the pain of what transpired today. But I can promise that this is not the end of your story. This is not the end of your destiny. It is far bigger and far greater than this tragedy. And in time you too shall begin to see that we are all instruments of fate and we all have a part to play. The death of your son will fuel and guide you along the future journey you will take.”
[8:59:54 PM] Dagny: And then... when the cracks inch far enough through the ice... there is a moment of stillness... For a moment everything is suspended. Heartbeat. Breath. Thoughts. And then... she shatters. Her breath quickens again, making up for lost time. She gives the woman a look of pleading that could not have been purer, shaking her head, denying this truth in the same instance that she would give absolutely anything for it not to be true.
[9:13:19 PM | Edited 9:15:04 PM] Fate: *The woman takes a deep breath.* “If only your father could see the woman you have become... how proud he would have been. My son loved you so much. So much that even against my wishes he left you with his brother and his family. I had believed that you should have been left in the company of our family. But your father was so against bringing you closer to the war than he had to.” *She sighs once more.* “There is no easy way to burden you with yet another uneasy truth. My name, you have heard since you were a young girl. You looked out onto the stars looking for signs of our stories to be true. You looked out upon the stars to see a glimpse of the Bifrost. Dagny, my dear, sweet granddaughter. My name is Frigga... but you may call me Frigg. And I am here to give you a gift. I am here to have you join your true family. To join the realm of Asgard to take your father’s place as my Scion.” *Her eyes show pride as she speaks even though her words are laced with sorrow.*
[9:31:29 PM] Dagny: This news which should strike like lightning is like a drop in a pond. “But my...” Dagny’s hand tightens around Frigg’s as the rest of the sentence puts a vise around her. Her face contorts as she pulls back from the sudden, powerful wave of emotion. She swallows the hard edge of the lone unspoken word back and tries for something else so as not to lose it completely. “Frigg, I can’t...”
[9:46:32 PM] Fate: “And yet I have seen it, my dear. I have seen a future where you sit high and proud. I have seen how you lead an army into battle against the Titans. An army fueled by the blood within your veins. I have seen you use the pain of this day to fuel your resolve. I have seen you become the mother you deserve to be. Your Elliot needs you now. His life is in danger and only by accepting my gift shall you be able to aid him, and undo the damage caused by a scion gone rogue. You are my Blood, you are my family. And I will be here for you no matter what you decide.” *She lets go of your hand and reaches into the back pocket of her jeans, pulls out something, and then places it on your lap.* “As your father came to your aid when you needed him most, I ask you to come to the aid of those who will need you. When you accept your gift, there will be a plane ticket in your name. It departs on January 23rd out of Newport. It will take you to New York. I will meet you at JFK when you arrive.” *She gets up and begins to walk out of the room. But she stops suddenly, then turns around and picks up the book she had dropped earlier. She takes the bookmark she was using and places it on your lap too.* “You may actually need this sooner than I’d like. My love, please prove me right, that you are as strong as I have forseen. And that you can overcome this hardship and do what is needed of you.” *She exits the room.*
[10:01:34 PM] Dagny: It’s not until the goddess heads towards the door that Dagny begins to feel the weight of the meaning of the word ‘alone.’ “Don’t go...” She can only manage a hoarse whisper as Frigg leaves. After that point she breaks, curling up onto herself and emptying her grief into the hospital pillow, her muffled sobs spilling out into the hall. The gifts rest untouched beside her. But they are still there when the merciful numbness of utter exhaustion overtakes her...
[10:04:29 PM] Fate: *You wake in the morning to find the items no longer on your lap. A nurse is finishing up after having checked your machines and changing your IV. She smiles at you and walks out the door.*
[10:21:32 PM] Dagny: Dagny stares at the wall. One day she’d have to leave the hospital. She’d have to go home. It would be empty. Unchanged since she left. As if nothing happened. And then... nothing. No job, no Elliot, no... no baby... No one. Nothing. The word echoes in her thoughts for a while, as if from across the great chasm. There was no point to going home. But there was even less point to doing anything else. There was no point to anything. Little else to do except stare at the wall until she just faded away entirely from consciously choosing not to exist. Except... Frigg’s words echo in her mind. Family. Elliot. Future. It takes a while for them to make their way across the chasm. But they do. And when they do, they take root in the wasteland. Wearily Dagny summons up the will to move her gaze from the wall to around the room, looking for the gifts she’d been left.
[10:23:37 PM] Fate: *As you look around the room you see a bag on a chair next to your bed.*
[10:25:45 PM] Dagny: After a long moment of simply staring at it, she manages to reach out to pull it onto her lap to look inside.
[10:27:17 PM] Fate: *Inside is a hard piece of paper with writing on it. You can’t make out what it says right away. Also inside is a small silver item.*
[10:29:14 PM] Dagny: Dagny takes a closer look at the silver item after she can’t seem to decipher what’s on the paper.
[10:37:48 PM] Fate: *As you take the item in your hand, you feel a surge rush through your body as the item begins to glow a deep green. The sound of ice cracking, the smell of your aunt’s hot cocoa, the sound of your cousins playing in the yard are there and gone in an instant. The weakness in your body fades as you begin to feel renewed. Your mind begins to process information faster. The heart rate monitor seems to slow down and then speed up. Your suddenly recall now what those symbols on the bookmark were: they were in your uncle’s old book he used to read you stories from. Ancient Nordic. And somehow it all makes sense. You don’t even need to look at the card again to realize what it says. Brooklyn, New York, February 8th, meat packing district, warehouse 12, 3pm. Dagny I’m sorry for what has happened to you. I love you, granddaughter. Everything seems clearer to you. The item, you realize, must be the cause. But what exactly is it?*
[10:39:03 PM | Edited 10:39:16 PM] Fate: *The item appears able to be opened.*
[10:50:30 PM] Dagny: Dagny takes a deep breath inward as she’s inundated by... all this... sensation. Then she breathes out once it passes. February 8th. So far away. Could she even bear to endure the sheer number of days in between? Weariness weighs her limbs at this thought. She wasn’t sure. But maybe she could endure today. And if she could endure today... maybe she could endure tomorrow. Whatever was waiting for her in Brooklyn... well, it was something and that was better than what she had now. She opens the silver item.
[10:57:12 PM] Fate: *You see that the item is a folding mirror — however, the mirror, though obviously made of glass, bears no reflection. As you look at the glass, your vision goes black for a second as you seem to be engulfed by colors and sound. As the sensation passes your vision is engulfed by a strange vision: A large metal bird flies through the air. Behind it a blue demon closes in. Explosions around the bird frighten it as it begins to dive. A red flying serpent closes in on the bird, diving after it. The demon smashes into the metal bird, breaking it in half. Flames spill out. A smaller bird falls out of the larger bird. As it free falls, the red serpent wraps it up and carries it away. Your vision returns to normal.*
[11:03:18 PM] Dagny: Dagny lets out a little shaky breath of surprise as if she’d just been dunked in freezing water. What in the tunderin’ name was that? Some sort of... vision. She stares at the mirror again, trying to discern how it did that.
[11:07:07 PM] Fate: *The mirror still reflects nothing. Instead it swirls with colors, blue, red, and silver.* ((YOU GOT MAIL! sorry had too lol)) *Frigg’s words about the plane ticket resonate once more in your mind.*
[11:11:36 PM] Dagny: Plane ticket. January 23rd. Closer, but not by much. Still, that thought was somehow... comforting.
[11:18:15 PM] Dagny: Dagny leaves the mirror open and folds her hands into her lap, the mirror resting in them. ‘A future where you sit high and proud... I have seen how you lead an army into battle against the titans...’ Were not Dagny so emptied she might laugh. Instead, she’s left to contemplate Frigg’s words.
[11:25:46 PM] Fate: *The words are as cryptic now as they were when they were told to you.
1348 December 16th, 2013 in Rutland, VT
[11:25:46 PM] Fate: Over the course of the next few weeks, even though you are a spitting image of perfect health physically, you are subjected to a number of sessions with the hospital’s grief counselor and psychiatrists before you are able to be released from the hospital. The strange images you saw never returned, but the swirling colors still remain on the mirror when you decide to look at it. Upon your arrival home you notice that it has been broken into. The place is ransacked and almost everything has been destroyed. Someone was clearly looking for something... or someone. Your house phone lies on the floor, the red message indicator light flashing.*
[11:28:52 PM] Dagny: Dagny clenches her jaw, looking around warily for any sign of anyone else there as she steps over the ruins and crouches to listen to the message.
[11:30:13 PM] Fate: *The apartment is completely empty.*
[11:31:59 PM] Dagny: Once assured that she’s alone, she presses the message playback button.
[11:38:48 PM | Edited 11:38:59 PM] Fate: “You have one new message from an unknown phone number. Message recieved on November 12th at ten thirty six AM. Hello, my dear. I am glad you have been released from the hospital. I know you are worried about the apartment but please listen to me very carefully. Leave now and head to the airport. I have changed your flight to leave tonight. You are not safe. I cannot be there to aid you so this is what is in my control. Dagny, remember, be strong. I know things are still hard for you but please — you will need a clear head to understand what is about to transpire. I love you my sweet child. When confronted at the checkpoint tell the man with the red hair you are my granddaughter. He has a thing for me. He will give you no trouble.... End of message.”
[11:39:51 PM] Fate: *Frigg’s voice on the answering machine echoes through your being. November 12th at 10:36 was right after she left you.*
[11:48:04 PM] Dagny: Did she even have any choice? Judging by the timestamp, the knowledge that Frigg had of events that hadn’t yet transpired... Yes, there was a choice. It wasn’t much of one. Once more Dagny looks around at the ruins of her apartment, a violation of the sacred space which was home. But after that night—had it really been less than the twenty years it felt?—it held nothing for her but an empty bed and an... an empty crib. Perhaps it was a mercy that she couldn’t stay here. Her hand flies to her pocket, which holds her folding mirror, just, for some reason, needing some assurance that it’s still there. It was her only worthwhile posession now. With one last look at her apartment, she turns away and heads straight for the airport.
[11:51:41 PM] Fate: *You get into your Honda and begin the drive to the Newport Airport. As you are used to there are military checkpoints sprinkled around. As you pull up to the first one there are no major issues — a simple showing of ID and you are on your way. It isn’t until the checkpoint to get into the airport that you are asked to step out of your vehicle by a Spanish man with his hand on his hip-hosltered pistol.*
[11:55:32 PM] Dagny: Dagny does so obediently, noting whether or not he has red hair, also noting the pistol. An unsettling thought, but Dagny hasn’t quite gotten to the point where she’s able to fear for her own life. “Is there a problem, sir?” she asks.
[11:58:32 PM] Fate: *The man has short black hair.* “You are Dagny Kron. It says here you are to be detained for questioning regarding a matter of national security. You will have to come with me.” *The man attempts to guide you to the inside of the guard shack. As he does, a man in uniform with red hair exits the shack and nods to the man escorting you.*
[12:21:33 AM] Dagny: Her eyes track the other fellow. If she was to act, it would have to be bold and it’d have to be now. She sighs in exasperation. “I was assured this identity would be in the clear. I’m on a very important mission from the top and I can’t afford to be delayed due to bureaucratic errors. And I’m sure you can’t afford the extra paperwork. Look, give me a moment and we can both avoid this mess, I promise.” (( God’s Honest ))
[12:31:04 AM] Fate: The man coming out would simply stop and smile shaking his head. The man escorting you would turn to you. "I am so sorry I must... I must have read the screen wrong ma’am. " *He turns his attention to the red-headed man* “O’Brien, can you escort this woman back to her vehicle?” *O’Brien smirks and nods his head. “Sure thing.” O’Brien walks you back to your car as you get in and drive off he waves and smiles at you. “What a cute new Scion,” he whispers to himself. “Coming into her own like that. So cute. Frigg was right, she is adorable.” *You make it to the airport and notice you don’t realize which airline you are supposed to go to.*
[12:37:30 AM] Dagny: As Dagny makes it to the airport, not knowing where to go, she keeps an eye out for any sign of Frigg. She was told to go here, so... there had to at least be some kind of signal.
[12:39:26 AM] Fate: (per+awar please join Rolz Lasthope
[12:40:19 AM] Dagny: (( 5 ))
[12:41:37 AM] Fate: *As you look around you notice a limo driver holding a sign that says ‘Kron’ by the front entrance.*
[12:45:47 AM] Dagny: Naturally, she heads that way. Once she gets to the driver she says, “Err... hello. Sorry. Kron. Dagny Kron.” Despite her boldness earlier, her natural Canadian instincts kick in. She never had a limo escort before. Then again she flew on a plane only once prior in her lifetime.
[12:47:39 AM] Fate: “Hello, Miss Kron, I was told to deliver this to you.” *He hands you a white envelope.*
[12:49:52 AM] Dagny: “Oh. Uh, thank you, sir.” She offers him a polite smile, then opens the envelope.
[12:51:06 AM] Fate: *Inside the envelope is a Delta Airlines ticket that leaves in 30 minutes. If you get to security now you should make final boarding.*
[12:54:06 AM] Dagny: She /had/ been a little puzzled that she’d be greeted by a limo driver before the actual flight. She was under the impression that usually that was supposed to be after. But she chose not to question it, and now it was a small mystery solved. It’s pushed to the back of her mind as she wastes no further time getting to her flight.
[12:57:14 AM] Fate: *You make it through security and to your flight just in time. You find your seat and the plane begins take off procedures for the relatively short flight. The flight attendants do their usual speach with one added touch:* “In the case of any flying Titanspawn or Scion attack, the no cell phone rule during the flight will be temporarily lifted.”
[12:58:14 AM] Fate: *The plane ride is generally easygoing. You hear the captain state you will be landing in JFK airport in 15 minutes.* (per+awar)
[12:58:38 AM] Dagny: (( Lol, another 5 ))
[12:59:34 AM] Fate: *You notice a blue blur fly past your window.*
[1:09:28 AM] Dagny: The memory of the big metal bird, the blue demon, and the serpent from her vision is summoned forth to her mind’s eye. “Shit,” she says. Maybe she wasn’t so far off from fearing for her life after all. Surely Frigg would’ve seen this as well? Or something like it? But she still scheduled this flight... there had to be some reason. Dagny looks around for any sign of... well... anything. Then, realizing she swore in polite company, she turns briefly to the person sitting next to her. “Ah, sorry. About the swearing, that is.” Awkwardly she turns to face the headrest of the seat in front of her.
[1:14:20 AM] Fate: *The captain’s voice comes over the intercom* “BRACE FOR IMPACT, BRACE FOR IMPACT.” *Explosions can be seen outside of your windows coming from the ground. As you are aware, every now and then flight get shot down by friendly fire during a air raid. Looks like today is one of those days. One of the explosions hits, bursting right beside an engine. The plane takes a huge dip and begins to dive. The blue blur comes flying toward your window. As it slows down you notice it is a woman dressed in a blue jumpsuit with short black hair. She looks pissed. She grabs the wing of the plane and snaps it off with ease, the sheer force ripping a hole in the plane. Unfortunately for you and about 12 others, this is where you all were sitting. You all are sucked out of the plane and begin to free fall toward the ground.*
[1:22:41 AM] Dagny: ‘I have seen a future where you sit high and proud... I have seen how you lead an army into battle against the titans...’ Well, Dagny could see the future too, a future called the ground and it was coming a lot faster than this hypothetical vision Frigg had seen. Heart pounding, wind rushing past her ears, her inevitable death staring her straight in the face... and Dagny laughs. She laughs at the absurdity, at so much meaning just thrown into the emptiness. Those doctors, those psychiatrists, all that work, all that pain and grief and suffering, and now...
[1:28:31 AM] Dagny: ... the red serpent. Dagny stops laughing and looks around.
[1:30:09 AM] Fate: *The ground comes closer and closer. Explosions continue above you. The end seems near. But that’s when you hear a death curdling screech. You peer your head behind you: three leather-winged harpies dive toward you and two other victims. The one harpy whose skin has a eerily red hue latches its talons into your leg and arm, piercing your skin. The three harpies with their three passengers/victims head into the city, explosions burning the night air close behind, below, and even in front of you. The smell of gunpowder fills yours nostrils. One of the other harpies carrying a passenger to your right explodes in front of your eyes as an explosion makes direct contact. Pieces of her flesh smack you in the face. The harpy to your left gets clipped and drops the other passenger.*
[1:36:41 AM] Dagny: Dagny winces and grits her teeth as the talons pierce her skin, and is stunned momentarily as gore splatters across her face. She shakes off this stunning and looks up to the harpy. Another bold move was required. Summoning up every last bit of commanding presence she acquired from being a big sisterly figure to four unruly boys and a willful girl she shouts, “Set me safely on the ground, NOW!” (( Overt Order ))
[1:39:40 AM] Fate: *The creature lets out a screech and begins to fly lower to the ground. It is then you see the soldiers taking aim. They begin to open fire. The bullets fly past your body barely missing you... however your ride... is not so lucky. The red harpy is riddled with bullets. It cries in agony as its blood showers upon you. You and the creature crash through a building. It finally lets you go as you go sliding. As you slide into the ground you stop when you hit a pair of legs.*
[1:41:24 AM] Dagny: Quickly Dagny attempts to scramble to standing, wiping the blood from her eyes. What a sight she must be!
[1:43:02 AM] Fate: *Before you stands a giant of a man, almost 8ft tall easily.* “Hello... you must be Dagny... I’m Zack, Son of Heimdall. Frigg told me to meet you here.”
[1:47:33 AM] Dagny: She blinks several times as she takes this fellow’s words and appearance in. “Ah... P-pleasure to meet you.” Instinctively she rubs where the harpy’s claws pierced her flesh. “Hope I didn’t keep you waiting too long,” she adds.
[1:51:26 AM] Fate: “Nope, just actually got here. Frigg’s timing is usually spot on. Now I don’t have much time.” *He hands you another white envelope.* “Inside is a metrocard with enough for one fare. Run down the stairs out to the street and turn left. Take the subway entrance, swipe the card, take it a few stops to get out of this area. Then exit the train. Come up top, grab a cab, and have them take you to the address — also found inside. Pay them with the 100 dollar bill. Use the key code on the back of the envelope to get into the apartment building and use the key — also inside — to open the door. Now I’M gonna go jump out that hole you just created and stop the soldiers from coming up here and stopping you... Any questions?”
[1:57:20 AM] Dagny: “No, I think I got it!” Dagny starts for the stairs. She stops and turns back him briefly, saying, “Thanks, and good luck!” As she makes her way down the stairs, shoes tapping furiously down the steps, her mind is rushing at a million miles per hour, trying to figure out how she’s not supposed to draw notice on public transit covered in blood like this.
[2:02:34 AM] Fate: *People seem to not care as you take the train, they just seem to ignore you and look the other way. The cabby also seems to not look at you directly. You arrive at the apartment. Inside is a sleeping bag and some cans of Chef Boyardee, a microwave, and paper plates enough to last you until the date on the bookmark that was given to you.*
